Peroneal Tendon Injuries

The peroneal tendons are the two tendons that run alongside each other on the outside of the ankle. Athletes participating in sports which require repetitive ankle motion are at risk of experiencing a peroneal tendon injury. Those who have high arches in the feet also tend to be more susceptible to this type of injury.

If you are experiencing pain, swelling, a warming sensation, sporadic sharp pain, or a feeling of weakness in the foot and/or ankle, sports injury specialist and surgeon, Dr. Kevin Nadel will determine if a peroneal tendon injury is to blame. There are various types of peroneal injuries, including tendonitis (an inflammation of one or both of the tendons); acute tears (often brought about by trauma); degenerative tears (often seen in tennis players, basketball players, and football players in Southern California, after the tendon has been overused and becomes thin and frayed); and subluxation (occurring when one or both of the tendons have slipped out of place).

Peroneal tendon injuries are often misdiagnosed initially, which is why you ought to see an experienced Southern California Sports Injury and Orthopaedic surgeon if you are experiencing these symptoms. Dr. Nadel has years of experience treating injured athletes at both his West Hills and Westlake Village offices. Treatment for peroneal injuries may range from immobilization to surgery depending upon the extent of the injury. Other nonsurgical treatments for peroneal tendon injuries may include oral medications, steroid injections, physical therapy and/or bracing.
